Dear Members and Friends of First Presbyterian Church,
After much study, conversation, and prayer, the Session has decided to move from having two worship services to one. Beginning on Sunday, June 19, our only Sunday worship service will begin at 10:00 a.m.
When change affects a community, some experience it as positive, some as negative, and some as unnecessary. But, as we move forward, it’s my hope that you’ll see many positive outcomes of this decision. For one, having us all gather together at one time will, I think, strengthen our relationships and energize the worship service itself.
Secondly, I think you’ll begin to see more cohesion between music and liturgy. Currently, the choral music at one service is repeated the following Sunday at the other service. In that system it’s been hard to coordinate music with the lectionary readings for the day.
Lastly, as the attendance at the 11:00 a.m. service has decreased, the number of people available to serve as liturgists, ushers, and communion servers has decreased as well. It takes a lot of people to lead in worship, and moving to one service will allow worship to be fully staffed.
Worship is central to the life of the community of faith. It’s my hope that, as we move forward, our worship together becomes more and more a gathering where we are both inspired and equipped to be followers of Jesus.
